Roading Engineer

Waimate District Council

Waimate, New Zealand

Reference: 6767018

Waimate District Council is after a Roading Engineer who knows roads like no other - someone with real-world experience and the skills to back it up. It's an ideal opportunity to gradually step into greater responsibility while absorbing the knowledge that's ready to be handed over.

What you'll do:

Working closely under the guidance of our Roading Manager, you'll play a key role in everything from day-to-day maintenance to strategic transport planning. Whether it's helping upgrade local bridges, shaping asset management plans, digging into data, or contributing to future-proofed infrastructure, you'll be a trusted leader within the team - influencing decisions, driving improvement, and making a real impact in a district that values your skills.

We won't list everything, but you'll be involved in:

  • Planning and delivering roading renewals and improvement projects
  • Managing asset data and condition assessments (RAMM, footpaths, seals, kerbs and channelling, etc)
  • Working with NZTA Waka Kotahi and regional collaborators on funding, reporting and shared goals
  • Drafting designs, managing contracts, and keeping us on time, on spec, and on budget
  • Safety audits, LTP planning, asset valuation, and the works - you'll be busy, but in the best way

Hours and Perks:

  • Monday to Friday, 8.00am - 4.30pm (37.5 hours per week, with an hour for lunch each day)
  • Birthday leave (yep, take the day off!), upfront sick leave, and workplace wellbeing support

Why Waimate?

You'll be working in one of New Zealand's best-kept secrets. Think epic scenery, outdoor adventures, affordable living, and no soul-crushing traffic. We're close to Mt Cook and Waitaki Lakes — perfect if you love biking, hiking, boating, or just fresh air and big skies.

You'll bring:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering (BE or equivalent)
  • 5 - 10 years' experience in civil infrastructure (roads/highways ideal)
  • Strong technical and contract management skills
  • Demonstrable experience with RAMM
  • A proactive, solutions-focused mindset
  • Great communication skills - written, verbal, and across teams and stakeholders
  • Proven leadership skills, with the ability to direct, support and guide others
  • Bonus points for NZTA, LTP or REG project experience

Please note: You will need to have and maintain a full New Zealand Driver Licence, and this role is subject to Police and Credit checks.
