Waimate District Council is establishing a new Three Waters Business Unit, and we're looking for an Assistant Engineer who wants to be part of major infrastructure projects that will shape the district's future.
This role provides hands‑on support to the Three Waters Manager, particularly across large capital works and the setup of our new internal business unit. We're looking for someone with genuine understanding of Three Waters, whether that comes from direct experience or from a role where you've been exposed to water, wastewater, or stormwater systems.

What the Role Involves:
In this role, you'll support the delivery of safe, reliable water services for the district by working directly alongside the Three Waters Manager on some of our largest and most impactful water infrastructure projects. You'll contribute to key programmes and capital works, including:
- Wastewater treatment plant upgrades
- Pump station improvements
- Water Treatment upgrades
- Three Waters Network reticulation upgrade programmes
Your work will span planning, design, and project delivery across water, wastewater, and stormwater activities. You'll also:
- Support the development and delivery of major Three Waters projects
- Work closely with operations, compliance, contractors, and field teams
- Assist with asset management, data, and renewals planning
- Contribute to project reporting and KPI monitoring
- Apply your technical thinking to solve on‑the‑ground challenges
- Build strong working relationships across Council and with external partners
What You'll Bring:
- Degree/diploma in Engineering (Civil preferred)
- Project Engineer or Three Waters experience (bonus!)
- Strong H&S focus
- Good communication and time‑management
- Knowledge of water, wastewater & stormwater systems
- Full NZ driver licence
